Application Code
As soon as you have activated 2FA for your account, you will no longer be able to receive emails as usual. This is because your mail programme will also need to authenticate itself to Zimbra and can not use 2FA for this. Instead, a so-called application code needs to be generated, which acts as a special password.
To help you with this process, the following instructions have been created for you. First of all, please log in to your Zimbra Account>.
NEW interface: Go to Settings -> Accounts and click on “DEFAULT” to open your account. Scroll down until you see the “+ Add a passcode” button (see the pictures).
OLD interface: Go to Preferences -> Accounts and use the “Add Application Code” button.
In order to be able to distinguish between the different codes later, it is advisable to first create a separate name for every code.
You will then see the code generated for you. Copy it and switch to your email program (i.e. Thunderbird).
Important
Furthermore, we recommend using the password manager to save the code.
Warning
While it is possible to add all third party software via a single application code, we strongly advise you not to do this for security reasons. If one of the application codes were to be compromised, it would have to be deleted as quickly as possible, but all other codes would not be affected.
Also, please note that deleting your 2FA-method for Zimbra will affect the application codes as well. Wich means, you would have to repeat the process above for every device.
Thunderbird
Got to File -> New -> Mail Account. Please enter your full name, eMail Address and the application code, you received from zimbra. The IMAP/SMTP-Password will be required every time as far as you did not check the Remember password option and Continue.
Thunderbird tries to detect the settings for your Mail address. Please change the Username that is used for authentication to your LOGIN.
Unfortunately, thunderbird is not able to detect encryption settings for our SMTP-Server. Please continue clicking Advanced Setup
For incoming Mail choose IMAP on imap2.mis.mpg.de on Port 993 with SSL/TLS and normal password
For outgoing Mail choose SMTP on smtp2.mis.mpg.de on Port 587 with STARTTLS and the normal password
Use Done
Don’t worry about the ‘normal password’ setting. Because the whole connection is encrypted, the password, of course, is encrypted too.
Finally, you should see the Inbox in your left pane.
