Remote Desktop

You can also start a remote desktop session on one of our compute servers. With this, you can run all graphical applications, e.g., Matlab or Mathematica, as on your local computer, even when working from outside the institute assuming you have an active VPN connection.

For this, you need to connect via ThinLinc. The corresponding client software is preinstalled on all computers in the institute and on notebooks you have borrowed from us.

On all other computer systems, please install the client software from

Configure Client

Please enter the server name hydra.mis.mpg.de. Login name and password are identical to your standard login at the institute computers:

connect

Now you can connect to the remote desktop service.

Usage

The desktop environment is the same as the standard environment on our desktop computers. You can start apps also in the same way, e.g., either directly via the menu or via the terminal application.

Furthermore, there is a special ThinLinc menu which you can open via the F8 key:

connect

This allows you to disconnect from the session or to change from fullscreen back to windowed mode.

Should you disconnect, please note that all your programs keep running in the still active session. You can reconnect later and will find all as when you have left the session. This way you can start longer running jobs without keeping the connection open all the time.

If you log out from the session as you would on your desktop computer, the session ends and the next time a new session will be created.
